My boyfriend and I decided to take a spontaneous trip to Tombstone, AZ. I had never been and the last time he went, he only got a couple of hours to look at things. So we packed our bags and set out on a mini vacation. After a good 500+ miles later we made it to Tombstone!
We booked our vacation with Airbnb and ended up on a secluded ranch in a tepee. Our neighbors for the weekend were some adorable farm animals and our hosts were so friendly and welcoming.
You can see my excitement for the baby goats haha! I couldn’t contain myself.
I wanted to make the most of our time in Tombstone and I think we did a pretty good job at getting in the most important landmarks and sites. Here is what we did in our 48 hours in Tombstone, AZ.
Things to do in Tombstone, AZ
1. Watch Reenactments on Allen Street
You can catch free reenactments of the famous gunfight that went down at the O.K. Corral.
2. Grab a drink and go back in time at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon
Big Nose Kate was famed for her companionship to Doc Holiday, one of the policemen that was involved in the famous gunfight. Big Nose Kate’s Saloon will take you back in time with live music, reenactments, and lots of history.
3. Boothill Graveyard
If you’re into history, this is a must see. It really takes you back to how violent and harsh the wild west was. There are 9 rows of graves and it costs only $3 to get in. Billy Clanton, Tom McLaury, and Frank McLaury are buried there. They were the three cowboys killed in the O.K. Corral gunfight.
4. Shopping on Allen Street
If you’re looking to do some shopping, Allen Street is where you’ll want to be. It’s not like you can really miss Allen Street because it’s pretty much where everything is at. They have antiques, western wear, and lots of souvenirs.
5. O.K. Corral Museum and Gunfight Site
Not only can you watch the famous gunfight reenactment on the same grounds as the actual fight, there are museums and exhibits that take you back in time. I loved looking at all the exhibits and memorabilia from the 1800’s.
6. Ghost Tour at Bird Cage Theatre
If you’re into haunted sites this one is for you. It was only $20/person for an hour and a half tour. The Bird Cage Theatre was a combination theater, saloon, gambling parlor, and brothel. The tour includes a tour around the theater and a lights out part for communicating with anyone haunting the building. We had some weird things happen in our group but I’ll let you take the tour and experience it for yourself. ๐
7. Head Out of Town and Stargaze
Besides Tombstone and Bisbee, there’s not much out there. We got some ambient light from Mexico but the stars were amazing. On top of our cool tepee that we booked on Airbnb for $40 a night, the stars made it even better.
Sign up for Airbnb to receive a credit towards your first trip! It’s so worth it and there are hundreds of rentals to choose from. Find out more here.
Here are some photos I took. The Milky Way was in full view our second night in Tombstone.
8. Kartchner Caverns State Park
Kartchner Caverns are a short 25 minute drive from Tombstone. This was worth the trip in itself. I’ve never been in a cavern with stalactites and stalagmites. It absolutely blew my mind! So take the trip and check it out. You can make a reservation over the phone for a time you want. I didn’t get any pictures inside because you’re not allowed to bring anything in with you. But you can do a quick google search and see how amazing the caverns are.
Well that’s our 48 hours in Tombstone, AZ. We had such an amazing time and a much-needed vacation together. We definitely want to go back to Arizona and visit Saguaro National Park. That’s up next on our list.
Until then…
